Morning After Pill

The morning-after pill, also known as the emergency hormonal contraceptive pill, can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible after intercourse.

If you require emergency contraception, one of our pharmacists will carry out a brief and confidential assessment. You’ll be asked to complete a short questionnaire to ensure the treatment is safe and suitable for you.

No appointment is necessary — just speak to a member of our pharmacy team in confidence.

Emergency Contraceptive Options

There are two types of emergency hormonal contraceptive (EHC) pills available without a prescription and both are available as a single dose tablet.

  • Levonorgestrel 1.5mg (commonly known as Levonelle One-Step)
    – Must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex to be effective.
  • Ulipristal acetate 30mg (commonly known as ellaOne)
    – Can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.

Both medications are most effective the sooner they are taken, so we recommend seeking advice as quickly as possible after unprotected intercourse. Our pharmacist will help determine which option is most suitable for you during a short, confidential consultation.

Accessing the Morning-After Pill

Our pharmacist will advise you on which emergency contraceptive pill is most suitable for you during a short, confidential consultation. Please note that the morning-after pill is intended for occasional emergency use only, and should not be used as a regular method of contraception.

If you require the morning-after pill, please speak to a member of our pharmacy team. You’ll be asked to complete a short questionnaire, which the pharmacist will review with you. If the treatment is suitable, the pill will be supplied. If not, the pharmacist will advise you on the most appropriate next steps or refer you to another service.
